Moderator's Message

I recently attended a family gathering and had occasion to visit First Congregational Church of Evanston, Illinois ("First" in Evanston was 140 years ago!). My message today is that we are not alone here at the edge of the continent. We are the inheritors of many generations of early and more modern "pilgrims" who sought to carve out a niche of religious freedom in the near-wilderness using faith and fellowship as cornerstones. Modern-day Congregationalists across the nation are challenged almost daily with how to live a meaningful personal life using these same cornerstones while furthering the work of the church.

As stated in our Articles of Incorporation 50 yearsNACCC 2010 Conference Anchorage Banner ago this year, our first purpose is to "worship together in the tradition of Congregational Christian churches". We have the strengths of a beautiful church facility with clear windows in the Congregational tradition to let in natures radiance. We also have nearly up-to-date bylaws and are in the process of some touch-ups, and we have many dozens of dedicated and caring friends and members.

We share values of outreach, compassion, friendliness, responsibility, and tolerance. Though we cherish diversity of thought, our challenge is to create broad unities of actions to create a more vibrant and rejuvenated church. We welcome all who share these common values and visions to join us on this exciting and adventurous path as we celebrate 50 years as a church.

Our boards meet monthly to chart this path, and we meet as a Congregation twice or more each year, so that our body can step out onto the pathway ahead. As recently-elected Moderator, I hope to help guide and facilitate our journey for the coming 12 months.

Walking together,

Jim Munter
